Comfortis flea tablets
Comfortis flea tablets have revolutionised flea prevention in dogs. Traditionally, flea prevention in dogs is achieved by using shampoos and washes, sprays, flea collars and spot-on formulations. The problem with these topical products is that many dogs are resistant to being bathed and do not like having spot-on liquids applied to their skin. Additionally, many shampoos, washes and sprays do not have long durations of action allowing fleas from the environment to re-infest the dog.
Comfortis tablets for dogs are designed for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations. Comfortis has been available for many years in Australia and in the USA but has only recently been licensed in the UK. The beauty of medicating dogs with Comfortis is that owners no longer need to spend hours contending with messy baths or topical medications. With the addition of this tablet into the dog's food, fleas are killed for up to 4 weeks. This also means that dogs can go swimming immediately following application and be bathed with other medicated or non-medicated shampoos without the fear of washing the flea treatment away.
Comfortis tablets should always be given with food.

Treating fleas with Comfortis
Comfortis is a highly effective oral flea treatment agent for dogs and cats, which provides protection against flea infestations for up to one month after treatment. Comfortis is an alternative to spot-on treatments or sprays and powders that can prove both messy and potentially toxic to the environment, as well as washing away with rain and baths.
What is Comfortis?
Comfortis is a palatable, beef-flavoured tablet designed to kill fleas and flea eggs for up to one month after treatment. Comfortis starts working in just half an hour, and the active ingredient in Comfortis, Spinosad, is environmentally friendly and naturally occurring, unlike many of the alternative toxic anti-parasitic products available for topical application.
How does Comfortis work?
The active ingredient in Comfortis, Spinosad, is an insecticide compound produced from chemicals that naturally occur in some forms of bacteria. Due to this it is classed as a natural product, and in many countries, has received organic certification. Spinosad is a neurotoxin to parasites such as fleas, which means that the compound destroys the parasite’s nerve tissue, killing both adult fleas and their larvae, and preventing their ability to reproduce.
Spinosad is safe for use in both dogs and cats when administered at the appropriate dosage and under veterinary guidelines, and Comfortis has undergone extensive clinical trials in both the UK and the USA to ascertain its effectiveness and safety for pets.
What animals can take Comfortis?
Comfortis can be prescribed for either cats or dogs, with tablets available in various different sizes to suit the needs of different sizes of pets. Comfortis should only be administered to the animal for which it has been prescribed.
Comfortis can be prescribed for dogs over the age of 14 weeks and weighing over 3.3lb, or for cats over the age of 14 weeks and weighing over 2lb.
How is Comfortis given?
Comfortis is given in tablet form, administered orally. The tablets are beef flavoured and palatable to cats and dogs, and can be chewed. If your pet will not voluntarily accept the pill, however, it can be given whole as you would with other tablet medications, and does not need to be chewed to prove effective. The tablets vary in size depending on the size of the animal for which they are prescribed.
Just one tablet of the appropriate size is required to provide a full month’s protection against fleas.
In order to maximise the effectiveness of the tablet, Comfortis should be given with food to ensure its rapid digestion. In the unlikely event that your pet vomits within an hour of dosage, another dose should be given to ensure protection. Comfortis should be given regularly on a monthly basis year-round, in order to ensure its efficacy at protecting your pet from fleas.
What are the advantages of Comfortis?
Comfortis is a natural product that is extremely well tolerated in cats and dogs, and is highly unlikely to produce any undesirable side effects such as vomiting, diarrhoea or digestive upsets. The tablet is palatable, chewable and does not taste bitter, making it well received by most pets, including those that will usually avoid taking oral medications of other types.
Comfortis gets to work in just thirty minutes, acting quickly to kill fleas and flea eggs on your pet, and halting their reproductive processes. It also offers many advantages over and above external products such as spot on treatments and powders and sprays.
Pets do not need to be isolated after treatment to keep them from transferring a surface treatment product onto people or other animals, and there is no danger of them licking the residue of such treatment products off their skin. Because Comfortis is an orally administered product, localised sensitivities and skin irritations that can present in some pets treated with topical products are also prevented, making it particularly suitable for pets that are prone to skin conditions or sensitivities.
Comfortis remains active for the entire month, and will not wash off in the rain or if you need to bathe your pet. Added to this, the active ingredient in Comfortis is highly effective against fleas at all stages of the lifecycle, and unlike some topical products, is not a product to which fleas in certain areas of the country have built up a resistance, limiting the efficacy of the product.
How do I get Comfortis for my pet?
Comfortis is a POM-V medication, which means that it can only be provided with a veterinary prescription. Once your vet has approved Comfortis for your pet, you can order online from us with your prescription.
