Lactulose can be used in constipated pets to aid the evacuation of faeces from the colon. This may be especially useful in older pets, perhaps suffering from kidney problems or in animals with narrowed pelvic canals (e.g. following a pelvic fracture).
Lactulose should only be used following discussion with your vet. Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide, a sugar molecule composed of two smaller sugar molecules bonded together, in this case fructose and galactose. Lactulose is not metabolised or absorbed by the body.
Rather, the bacteria in the colon or large bowel break the lactulose down into acids. These acids pull water into the colon and soften the stool. Peristalsis, the movement of the food through the intestines, is also promoted through the actions of lactulose. Bowel evacuation becomes much easier as a result.
