Grooming your Cat or Dog - The Best Grooming Tips For Your Pet

Tips for Grooming Your Pet

Humans will groom themselves often, because they want to look and feel their best. Did you know that grooming is also very important for pets as well? For the most part, cats will just groom themselves, but there may be times that they need a bath as well. You will usually just need to groom your dog regularly, because unlike cats they don’t have that instinct to groom themselves. Here are a few tips to ensure that your pet is being groomed properly.

First, you will want to make sure that you have all of the grooming supplies that you will need. You will need shampoo, a towel, a brush, and you might even want to have a blow dryer on hand. You should do this before you bring your pet into the bathroom, because this will make the process go smoother. After all, some pets will really want to avoid grooming time, while others may love it. It has everything to do with their temperament.

You will then want to make sure that you run bath water that is comfortable for them. You don’t want it to be too hot or too cold. You can put them into the bath tub and if you have a detachable shower head, it really makes things a lot easier for you. Sometimes, people prefer to bathe their animals outside, which is definitely an option, but you really have to take into consideration the weather. If it is cold outside, you don’t want to bathe them outside. When you get them into the bath, you will want to use your hands to rub the shampoo into their fur after they are wet. You need to make sure that it lathers up well, so that it will get them really clean. Some people choose a shampoo that has medication in it, because it can help to treat certain skin conditions. Just remember to not use a shampoo that was not specifically formulated for pets, because this can dry their skin out and lead to other problems.

After lathering them up well, you will want to make sure that you rinse all of the water out effectively. Doing this will help to ensure that you don’t leave any shampoo behind. If you don’t get all of the shampoo out, their fur may not feel the best when it is dry. They may also lick their fur and get the shampoo into their mouth, and this can lead to digestive issues, not to mention it won’t taste too good. Once they have been bathed, you will want to also brush their teeth. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste that is specially formulated for pets, as human toothbrushes and toothpaste won’t really work well for them, and may even be harmful to them. Before you let them run out, you will want to make sure that you use a hair dryer to get the excess water. You don’t have to dry it all the way, but you will want to make sure that you dry it enough so that they don’t shake water everywhere throughout your home. Also, consider the fact that they will be cold until they are dry. Don’t hold the hair dryer on the same place for an extended period of time, because this can burn them.

If you use these tips, you can actually groom your pet effectively from the comfort of your own home without having to take them to the groomer. If you want to clip their toenails though, you need to be extremely careful. This is something that can actually be dangerous if you don’t do it with caution.
