Galliprant for Dogs
Galliprant for Dogs is a prescription-only, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) designed specifically to manage the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. Galliprant contains the active ingredient grapiprant, which belongs to a class of drugs known as piprants.
Galliprant is intended for oral use and is available in tablet form in 20mg, 60mg and 100mg strengths. Osteoarthritis is a common, progressive condition that affects the joints. It causes pain, swelling, reduced mobility, and stiffness. While it cannot be cured, effective treatment options like Galliprant can significantly improve a dog’s comfort and quality of life.
A VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION IS REQUIRED FOR GALLIPRANT

Understanding Osteoarthritis in Dogs
Osteoarthritis in dogs is a degenerative joint disease that develops when the cartilage that cushions the joints begins to break down. Cartilage normally acts as a shock absorber and allows joints to move smoothly. As it deteriorates, the bones within the joint begin to rub against each other, leading to pain and inflammation.
This condition is especially common in older dogs, but it can also affect younger dogs due to injury, joint abnormalities, or genetic predisposition. Large breeds and overweight dogs are at greater risk due to the extra strain placed on their joints.
Typical signs of osteoarthritis in dogs include:
- Reluctance to walk, run, or climb stairs
- Limping or lameness
- Stiffness, especially after rest
- Difficulty rising from a lying or seated position
- Decreased activity or interest in play
- Behavioural changes such as irritability or restlessness
Because osteoarthritis is a chronic and progressive disease, early diagnosis and ongoing management are crucial. Veterinarians commonly recommend a combination of weight management, physical therapy, and medications like Galliprant to control the symptoms.
How Galliprant Tablets Work
Galliprant (grapiprant) is different from traditional NSAIDs. It is a first-in-class piprant, which means it targets a specific receptor associated with canine osteoarthritis pain and inflammation. Specifically, Galliprant blocks the EP4 receptor, which is one of four receptors in the body that respond to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). PGE2 plays a significant role in the body’s inflammation process. By selectively blocking the EP4 receptor, Galliprant reduces pain and inflammation without interfering with the other functions of prostaglandins, which include maintaining kidney health, blood flow to the stomach, and protecting the gastrointestinal tract.
This targeted action allows Galliprant to provide effective pain relief while minimising the potential side effects often associated with traditional NSAIDs, such as gastrointestinal upset, kidney impairment, or liver damage.
