What is metrobactin used for in dogs and cats?

Metrobactin is the brand name for a medication containing metronidazole, an antibiotic that is used to treat various infections in dogs. Metrobactin is effective against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoan parasites. Metrobactin tablets are commonly prescribed to treat a variety of conditions, including:

• Gastrointestinal infections: Metrobactin can help treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, such as Clostridium perfringens or Clostridium difficile. It is also used to manage inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colitis in dogs.
• Periodontal infections: Metrobactin is often used in combination with other antibiotics to treat dental infections and periodontal disease in dogs.
• Protozoal infections: Metrobactin is effective against certain protozoan parasites, such as Giardia and Trichomonas, which can cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms in dogs.
• Soft tissue and bone infections: Metrobactin can be used to treat certain anaerobic infections in wounds, abscesses, and bone infections.

It is essential to follow your Vet's instructions and complete the full course of Metrobactin, even if your dog appears to be feeling better before the medication is finished.
