Libromide is a veterinary medicine used to help manage epilepsy in dogs. Libromide Tablets are commonly prescribed by veterinary surgeons for the long-term treatment of canine epilepsy, especially in cases where phenobarbital alone is not effective or suitable. 325mg Libromide contains the active ingredient potassium bromide, which has anticonvulsant properties. It is used either as a standalone treatment or in combination with other anti-epileptic medications to help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in dogs.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain. In dogs, it leads to recurrent seizures, which can vary in type and severity. The exact cause of epilepsy is often unknown, particularly in cases of idiopathic epilepsy, which is the most common form in dogs. However, the condition can also result from underlying health issues such as brain tumours, liver disease, head trauma, or exposure to toxins. Regardless of the cause, the goal of treatment is to reduce seizure frequency and improve the dog’s quality of life.

Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. When nerve cells (neurons) fire excessively or erratically, this can result in uncontrolled muscle movements, loss of consciousness, drooling, twitching, or other physical symptoms. In dogs with epilepsy, this activity can be triggered randomly and may occur multiple times a month or even several times in a single day. Not all seizures are the same. Some may involve the whole body (generalised seizures), while others may only affect part of the body or behaviour (focal seizures).

Libromide Tablets work by stabilising the electrical activity in the brain. Potassium bromide, the active ingredient, alters the chloride transport within neurons, increasing the seizure threshold and reducing the likelihood of seizures occurring. This helps to calm the nerve signals in the brain, making seizures less frequent and less intense. Unlike some medications, Libromide is not metabolised by the liver, which makes it a useful alternative for dogs with liver conditions or those who do not tolerate phenobarbital well.

Description

Libromide for Dogs - For the treatment of refractory epilepsy in dogs

Libromide may only be supplied with a valid veterinary prescription issued by your vet. You should only purchase Libromide if you have or are in the process of arranging such a prescription. See information bar for further details.

Potassium bromide has a long half-life, meaning it stays in the body for an extended period. Because of this, it takes several weeks to reach steady levels in the bloodstream, and it may take some time before noticeable improvements are seen. However, once stabilised, it allows for consistent control of seizures when given at the prescribed dose. It is important that Libromide is administered exactly as directed by a veterinary surgeon, as maintaining consistent blood levels is crucial to its effectiveness.

325mg Libromide is available in tablet form and is typically given once or twice a day with food. The dosage will vary depending on the dog’s weight, medical history, and response to treatment. Veterinary surgeons may request regular blood tests to monitor the concentration of potassium bromide in the system and to ensure the dose remains therapeutic. Adjustments may be made based on the results and the clinical signs observed in the dog.

As with any medication, there can be side effects. Common side effects of Libromide include increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, drowsiness, and wobbliness or lack of coordination (ataxia). These side effects are often dose-dependent and may subside over time. In rare cases, dogs may develop more serious adverse reactions. Any concerning symptoms should be reported to a veterinary surgeon as soon as possible.

Dogs taking Libromide may require lifelong treatment. Stopping the medication suddenly can lead to an increase in seizures or status epilepticus, a potentially life-threatening condition involving continuous or repeated seizures without recovery between them. For this reason, it is essential that treatment is not altered or stopped without veterinary guidance.

Monitoring is an important part of managing canine epilepsy. Owners are often asked to keep a seizure diary, recording the date, time, length, and nature of each episode. This helps veterinary surgeons to assess how well the treatment is working and to make informed decisions about medication adjustments. In many cases, combining Libromide with other treatments or supportive therapies may offer the best control of the condition.

While Epilepsy in Dogs cannot be cured, effective management with medication like Libromide can significantly reduce seizure activity and help dogs lead more stable lives. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning are key to successful long-term management. Veterinary advice should always be sought when a dog experiences its first seizure or shows any signs of neurological issues.
