Vetoryl Flavoured Tablets for Dogs

Vetoryl Flavoured Tablets are a prescription medication used in the treatment of Cushing’s disease (hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs. This condition affects the endocrine system and results in an overproduction of cortisol. Vetoryl Tablets contain the active substance trilostane, which helps regulate hormone levels and manage the symptoms associated with Cushing’s disease. Vetoryl Tablets are flavoured and are available in 20mg, 30mg and 60mg strengths. Each tablet can be snapped in half.

Vetoryl Flavoured Tablets are intended for once-daily oral use and should only be used under veterinary supervision.

Understanding Cushing’s Disease in Dogs

Cushing’s disease occurs when a dog’s body produces excessive amounts of cortisol, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism, immune response, and stress. While cortisol is essential for many normal bodily functions, prolonged elevated levels can cause harm. Cushing’s disease in dogs is usually caused by a benign tumour on the pituitary gland (pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism) or, less commonly, a tumour on the adrenal gland (adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism). The condition typically affects middle-aged to older dogs.

Common signs of Cushing’s disease include:

  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Panting
  • Lethargy
  • Muscle wasting
  • A pot-bellied appearance
  • Hair loss or thinning of the coat
  • Skin changes such as thinning or increased pigmentation

If left untreated, the disease can lead to complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and poor wound healing. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are crucial in managing symptoms and improving a dog’s quality of life.

How Vetoryl Works

Vetoryl contains trilostane, which is a synthetic steroid analogue that acts as a selective inhibitor of the enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This enzyme is involved in the production of several steroid hormones, including cortisol. By inhibiting this enzyme, Vetoryl Tablets reduce the production of cortisol in the adrenal glands. This helps control the clinical signs associated with excessive cortisol levels. Vetoryl does not cure Cushing’s disease but helps manage the condition effectively. The goal of treatment is to reduce cortisol to a normal level without causing adverse effects related to low cortisol.
