Cystophan for Cats

Cystophan for Cats is a supplement designed to support urinary tract health and bladder function in cats. It is often recommended by veterinary professionals for cats suffering from Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), a common urinary condition that can cause stress and discomfort. By combining carefully selected ingredients, Cystophan helps maintain a healthy bladder lining, supports natural defences against irritation, and promotes overall urinary comfort.

How Cystophan for Cats Works

Cystophan is formulated with a combination of ingredients that support the bladder lining and promote comfort in cats affected by urinary conditions such as FIC. Its action is based on replacing and strengthening the natural defences of the bladder.

N-acetyl D-glucosamine: This is a key building block in the production of glycosaminoglycans. Supplementing with N-acetyl D-glucosamine supports the repair and reinforcement of the bladder lining, helping to restore its natural protective barrier.

L-tryptophan: This amino acid is included due to its role in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and stress responses. Since stress is strongly associated with the occurrence of FIC episodes, supporting normal serotonin levels may help reduce the frequency of flare-ups.

Hyaluronic acid: This naturally occurring substance helps maintain tissue hydration and elasticity. In the bladder, it plays a role in supporting the integrity of the lining and improving its ability to resist irritation.

Chicken flavouring: This is added to encourage voluntary acceptance by cats, making administration more straightforward. Cats are known for being selective with their food and supplements, so palatability is an important factor in ensuring consistent use.

Understanding Feline Idiopathic Cystitis

Feline Idiopathic Cystitis is one of the most frequently diagnosed urinary tract problems in cats. It is classified as a form of lower urinary tract disease and is most often identified when cats show signs of difficulty urinating, frequent trips to the litter tray, blood in the urine, or signs of pain during urination.

The term 'idiopathic' means that the exact cause of the condition is not always known. However, it is widely recognised that stress, environmental changes, and diet can contribute to flare-ups. Cats with FIC may experience recurrent episodes, with periods of discomfort followed by intervals of apparent normal health.

The condition is believed to be associated with a defective bladder lining. In healthy cats, the bladder wall is protected by a layer of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). This protective barrier helps to shield the bladder tissue from the irritating effects of urine. In cats with FIC, this lining is often thinner or damaged, which allows the bladder wall to become more sensitive to irritation. This can result in inflammation, discomfort, and the typical signs seen in affected cats.

Administration and Use

Cystophan for Cats is supplied in capsule form. The capsules can either be given whole or opened and sprinkled onto food, depending on the preference of the cat and the ease of administration. The flexibility of the capsule design helps to ensure that cats can reliably receive their supplement.

Cystophan is typically given daily, with the amount adjusted according to the weight of the cat and the advice of a veterinary professional. In some cases, higher initial amounts may be recommended, followed by a maintenance dose once symptoms are better controlled.

Supporting Cats with FIC

Management of Feline Idiopathic Cystitis often requires a multi-faceted approach. Alongside the use of supplements such as Cystophan, environmental changes and stress reduction strategies are important. Providing multiple litter trays, maintaining a consistent routine, offering opportunities for play, and ensuring access to fresh water can all contribute to improved urinary health. Dietary adjustments, particularly the use of urinary health-specific foods, may also be recommended to help manage the condition.

Signs of Urinary Problems in Cats

Recognising the signs of FIC or other urinary issues is essential for timely management. Cat owners should be aware of:

  • Frequent visits to the litter tray with little urine produced
  • Straining or signs of pain while urinating
  • Blood in the urine
  • Excessive licking around the urinary opening
  • Urination outside the litter tray
  • Behavioural changes such as restlessness or hiding

These signs should always be taken seriously. Veterinary consultation is essential if a cat shows signs of urinary difficulty, as urinary blockages can be life-threatening, particularly in male cats.
