Panacur Oral Suspension for Dogs and Cats
Broad-Spectrum Worming Treatment for Effective Parasite Control
Panacur Oral Suspension is a liquid worming treatment for dogs and cats, designed to eliminate a wide range of internal parasites. It contains the active ingredient fenbendazole, a well-established anthelmintic that targets gastrointestinal worms, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and certain tapeworms. It is also effective against protozoan parasites such as Giardia in dogs.
The oral suspension is easy to administer and is suitable for both adult pets and young animals, including puppies and kittens. Panacur is often recommended by veterinarians as part of a routine worming schedule, as well as for the treatment of specific parasitic infections.
Panacur Oral Suspension works by disrupting the energy metabolism of susceptible parasites. Fenbendazole interferes with the parasites’ ability to absorb glucose, which is essential for their survival. Without access to energy, the worms become paralysed and die, after which they are naturally expelled from the animal’s digestive system.
Fenbendazole is classified as a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic, meaning it is effective against a wide range of worm species. It acts directly within the gastrointestinal tract and is well tolerated by most dogs and cats, including very young or weak animals.
Panacur targets the following parasites:
Roundworms (Toxocara spp. and Toxascaris leonina)
Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala)
Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis)
Certain tapeworms (Taenia spp.)
Protozoa (Giardia spp. in dogs)
Panacur may also be used as part of the treatment for lungworm infections in dogs when prescribed in combination with other medication.
Routine worming is essential for maintaining the health of dogs and cats. Internal parasites can cause a variety of health problems, especially in young, old, or immunocompromised animals. Even in pets that appear healthy, worms may still be present and shedding eggs into the environment.
Common signs of worm infestation include:
Weight loss
Diarrhoea or vomiting
A bloated abdomen, especially in puppies and kittens
Scooting or dragging of the bottom
Poor coat condition
Visible worms or segments in the faeces
In severe cases, heavy worm burdens can lead to anaemia, intestinal blockages, or even death.
Some parasites that infect pets can also pose a risk to human health. Zoonotic transmission can occur, particularly with roundworms such as Toxocara canis, which can cause health complications if ingested by humans, especially children. Regular worming reduces the risk of such transmission and is an important part of responsible pet ownership.
Routine deworming helps break the parasite life cycle, protecting not only the individual pet but also other animals in the household and the wider environment.
Panacur Oral Suspension should be used according to veterinary guidance or the dosage instructions provided. The standard strength is 10% fenbendazole (100 mg/mL), and the amount given depends on the weight of the animal.
Panacur is typically administered orally using a syringe or added to food. For routine treatment, a single dose may be sufficient, while some conditions may require daily treatment over multiple days. For example, treating Giardia may involve a three-day course.
Panacur is suitable for:
Puppies and kittens from two weeks of age
Pregnant bitches (to reduce the risk of transmission of worms to puppies)
Adult dogs and cats as part of a routine worming programme
Always complete the full course as prescribed, even if symptoms appear to resolve. This ensures that all life stages of the worms are effectively targeted.
Panacur Oral Suspension is generally well tolerated by dogs and cats. Side effects are uncommon but may include mild gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or soft stools. These effects are usually short-lived and resolve without intervention.
If a pet experiences an allergic reaction or unusual symptoms after administration, veterinary advice should be sought immediately.
Fenbendazole has a wide safety margin and is considered safe for use in pregnant animals. However, it is important to use only the dose recommended and not to combine it with other antiparasitic medications without veterinary approval.
