Allerderm Spot on

Allerderm Spot On is a topical dermatological treatment designed to help manage skin allergies in cats and dogs. It is used to reinforce the natural skin barrier, restore hydration, and support the skin’s protective functions. Allerderm is especially helpful for pets with allergic skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, contact allergies, and other chronic skin irritations.

How Allerderm Spot On Works

Allerderm Spot On is based on a proprietary blend of ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol, which mimic the natural composition of healthy skin lipids. These lipids are essential components of the skin’s outermost layer – the stratum corneum – which acts as a barrier against irritants, allergens, and pathogens.

In pets with allergic skin disease, this barrier is often damaged or weakened. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, it allows allergens and bacteria to penetrate more easily, which leads to further inflammation, itchiness, and infection.

By replenishing key skin lipids, Allerderm Spot On helps to:

  • Rebuild the skin’s protective barrier

  • Improve hydration and reduce skin dryness

  • Reduce exposure to allergens and irritants

  • Support the skin’s natural healing process

The formulation is absorbed into the skin, where it helps to restore balance and integrity. It can be used on its own or alongside other dermatological or systemic treatments prescribed by a veterinarian.

Application and Dosage

Allerderm Spot On is easy to apply directly onto the skin. For dogs and cats, part the fur between the shoulder blades and apply the contents of the pipette directly onto the skin. In animals with localised skin lesions, the solution can also be applied directly to affected areas if recommended by a veterinary professional.

The typical treatment schedule is:

  • One pipette per week for 4 weeks

  • Followed by one pipette every two weeks for maintenance

In more severe cases, veterinarians may advise more frequent use, such as two to three times per week during flare-ups.

The product is suitable for long-term use and is well tolerated by most cats and dogs. It does not contain steroids or antibiotics.

Understanding Skin Allergies in Pets

Skin allergies are one of the most common reasons for veterinary consultations in both cats and dogs. These conditions can be caused by a wide range of allergens, including:

  • Environmental allergens: pollen, grasses, mould spores, dust mites

  • Food allergens: proteins such as beef, chicken, dairy, or fish

  • Flea allergy dermatitis: a reaction to flea saliva following a bite

  • Contact allergies: sensitivity to materials such as wool, cleaning products, or certain shampoos

When a pet with allergic tendencies encounters a triggering substance, their immune system overreacts, causing inflammation in the skin. This typically results in symptoms such as:

  • Persistent scratching, chewing, or licking

  • Red, inflamed, or scaly skin

  • Hair loss or patchy coat

  • Ear infections or discharge

  • Skin odour due to secondary bacterial or yeast infections

Chronic allergic skin conditions can significantly affect a pet’s wellbeing. Left untreated, the repeated trauma from scratching or licking can worsen the condition, damage the skin further, and create a cycle of inflammation and infection.

Managing skin allergies often requires a multi-step approach. This may include identifying and avoiding triggers, administering medication to reduce inflammation and itching, treating infections, and supporting the skin with topical treatments such as Allerderm Spot On.

The skin’s barrier function is a key element in the body’s defence system. It acts as a shield that prevents allergens, bacteria, and harmful substances from entering the deeper layers of the skin. In allergic pets, this barrier is often compromised due to genetic factors or chronic inflammation.

Recent veterinary research highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy skin barrier in allergic pets. Improving the quality of this barrier can reduce flare-ups, lower the risk of infection, and reduce the need for systemic medications like steroids or antibiotics.

Allerderm Spot On plays an important role in this process by helping to restore lipid balance and integrity. Its regular use can support healthier skin over time and make pets more resilient to allergic triggers.

While Allerderm Spot On is available without prescription, it is often used as part of a wider treatment plan supervised by a veterinary surgeon. For pets with moderate to severe allergies, a full diagnostic work-up may be required to identify specific allergens and recommend long-term strategies.

This may involve:

  • Allergen testing or exclusion diets

  • Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. corticosteroids, oclacitinib)

  • Antihistamines or immune-modulating treatments

  • Flea control protocols

  • Medicated shampoos or wipes

  • Dietary supplements to support skin health
