Stronghold - Cat - 45mg x 6 Pipettes
Stronghold 45mg for Cats combines monthly flea treatment and prevention with activity against several other common parasites in a convenient spot-on format. Each blue-capped pipette is designed for cats weighing 2.6–7.5kg and contains selamectin, which treats fleas, ear mites, biting lice, adult roundworms and adult hookworms.
Flea bites can cause itching and skin irritation, while repeated infestations can be difficult to manage. Stronghold helps interrupt the flea lifecycle as well as killing adult fleas. This pack contains six pipettes, providing six monthly applications when prescribed for one cat’s flea treatment. The solution is applied directly to the skin.

Additional Product Information
Description
Stronghold 45mg for Cats provides prescription flea treatment and prevention in a pack of six spot-on pipettes. Each pipette contains 45mg of selamectin in 0.75ml of solution and is intended for cats weighing 2.6–7.5kg. A single application treats fleas and protects against new flea infestations for one month. Stronghold 45mg also treats ear mites, biting lice, adult roundworms and adult intestinal hookworms, and can prevent heartworm disease when used monthly as prescribed. The blue-capped pipettes are applied to the skin at the base of the neck, giving an option for cats that are difficult to medicate by mouth. Six pipettes provide six individual applications. The appropriate frequency for other parasites depends on the condition being treated, so the pack should be used according to the prescription.
Fleas can cause itching, skin irritation and repeated grooming, and sensitive cats may develop flea allergy dermatitis. In this condition, an allergic response to flea bites can lead to considerable discomfort even when few fleas are visible. Stronghold 45mg can be used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis by reducing exposure to fleas. Effective flea management also needs to account for reproduction: eggs and immature stages in places a cat rests can contribute to continuing infestation. Stronghold 45mg kills adult fleas and has activity against eggs and larvae, helping interrupt this cycle. Monthly application can therefore help reduce the environmental flea population in areas the cat uses. An established infestation may still take time to resolve as immature stages develop. Treating other household animals with appropriate products and attending to bedding and resting areas helps address sources of reinfestation without repeatedly applying extra doses to one cat. A cat’s grooming habits can also make fleas difficult to spot. Evidence may include flea dirt in the coat or repeated chewing at the skin rather than a large number of visible insects. Household control is most effective when all animals are considered together, using the correct species and weight presentation for each. The six-pipette pack can make planned monthly applications easier to organise, but it remains six separate treatments rather than a single application lasting six months. Keeping a note of which cat received which product is useful where pets have different parasite prescriptions.
Selamectin belongs to the macrocyclic lactone group of antiparasitic medicines. It affects chloride channels in susceptible parasites, disrupting normal nerve and muscle activity and causing paralysis and death. After application, Stronghold 45mg is absorbed through the skin and distributed through the body. This explains how a medicine placed on the neck can act against certain internal parasites as well as fleas. Its licensed worm coverage includes adult Toxocara cati roundworms and Ancylostoma tubaeforme hookworms. Stronghold 45mg is also used for Otodectes cynotis ear mites and Felicola subrostratus biting lice. These indications describe particular parasites, rather than complete protection against every worm or external parasite. This standard selamectin product does not provide tick or tapeworm treatment and is different from Stronghold Plus. Where additional parasite cover is needed, the vet can select an appropriate plan based on the cat’s lifestyle, health and exposure.
Apply Stronghold 45mg to dry skin, parting the coat at the base of the neck in front of the shoulder blades until the skin is visible. Hold the pipette upright and press the cap down to puncture the seal, then remove it. Place the tip against the exposed skin and empty the pipette as directed in the leaflet, keeping the liquid at the application site rather than spreading it across the coat. Do not massage it in. The position is chosen to reduce licking, and animals should not groom one another while the site remains wet. Stronghold 45mg is for application to the skin even when treating ear mites; it must not be put into the ear canal. Use the whole appropriate pipette for the prescribed application rather than saving an opened pipette for later. Do not apply to a wet coat. Bathing or shampooing two or more hours afterwards does not reduce the stated efficacy.
Stronghold 45mg is suitable only for the specified weight band, and animals must be at least six weeks old. A kitten can be old enough for selamectin treatment while still needing a different pipette because of its weight. The product must not be used in cats with a concurrent disease or those that are debilitated and underweight for their age and size. The licensed information permits use in pregnant, nursing and breeding cats when the appropriate product is prescribed. Stronghold 45mg can cause temporary changes at the application site, including hair clumping or mild hair loss; irritation and neurological effects are also recognised. Significant licking may cause brief excessive salivation. Contact the practice if a reaction persists or your cat becomes unwell, and obtain urgent advice for seizures or marked deterioration. Do not compensate for an uncertain application by immediately giving another pipette. Explain what happened so the vet can assess whether any further treatment is necessary.
Keep Stronghold 45mg pipettes in their original packaging below 30°C, protected from moisture, and out of reach of children and animals. The solution is highly flammable, so keep it away from heat, sparks and flames. After application, keep the cat away from ignition sources for at least thirty minutes or until the coat is dry. Avoid touching the application site until it has dried. Children must not handle the cat on the treatment day, and the cat should not sleep with its owners that day. Wash your hands after applying Stronghold 45mg and dispose of used pipettes promptly through the appropriate waste route. Keep the product out of watercourses because it is hazardous to aquatic organisms. For a monthly flea schedule, recording each application date helps distinguish the next planned dose from an early repeat. Before travel, discuss destination-specific parasite risks, including whether the licensed monthly heartworm prevention is appropriate for your cat.
Which cats can use Stronghold 45mg?
Stronghold 45mg is the blue-capped presentation for cats weighing 2.6–7.5kg. Animals must be at least six weeks old, and this product is unsuitable for cats with concurrent disease or those that are debilitated and underweight. Check the current weight and prescription, especially when a kitten is still growing.
Does Stronghold 45mg treat worms in cats?
It treats adult roundworms, Toxocara cati, and adult intestinal hookworms, Ancylostoma tubaeforme. It also has a licensed monthly heartworm-prevention use. It does not cover every worm, including tapeworms, so discuss additional parasite needs with your vet rather than treating the term wormer as complete coverage.
Where do I apply Stronghold for ear mites?
Apply the prescribed pipette to the skin at the base of the neck, in front of the shoulder blades, just as directed for other licensed uses. Do not put Stronghold into the ear canal. The medicine is absorbed through the skin and acts against susceptible parasites after distribution in the body.
Can my cat be bathed after Stronghold?
Do not apply Stronghold to a wet coat. Bathing, shampooing or soaking at least two hours after application does not reduce the stated efficacy. Keep the product out of watercourses and follow the leaflet’s precautions, including avoiding contact with the treatment site until it is completely dry.
What if my cat licks Stronghold?
Significant licking may cause a brief period of excessive salivation. Correct placement on the neck helps reduce access, and animals should not groom each other while the site is wet. Contact the vet if signs persist or your cat becomes unwell, and do not automatically apply another pipette.
What our customers say about us.
I've used Vet Dispense a few times now for my cat's medication needs and this most recent time was fantastic. Not only did i get a reply to an email within about 15 minutes of me sending it, but once ordered, the medication came in the post the next day which was truly appreciated. They are good!
