Treating fleas with Frontline

Frontline is one of the most popular flea treatment products in the UK, and one that can now be bought in pharmacies and online without a veterinary prescription, making it easy to purchase without the need for veterinary consults and prescription administration costs. One of the first of the new generation of spot-on flea treatment agents, Frontline offers superior, long lasting protection when compared to traditional products such as pills and powders, and is also well tolerated and easy to use.

What animals can Frontline be used on?

Frontline is suitable for dogs and cats, and comes in various different dosage sizes to suit the needs of different sized animals. It is important to note that the chemical makeup of Frontline differs slightly between the canine and the feline formulations, and so the correct product should be selected for your particular pet, as the canine and feline versions of the product should not be used interchangeably.

Frontline can also be used on some other domestic animals that are prone to fleas, including birds, ferrets and chinchillas, under the direction of your vet, who can recommend the correct product to use, the dosage rate, and how often to treat your pet.

How does frontline work?

The active ingredient in Frontline is Fipronil, which is a synthetic chemical compound that acts as a neurotoxin to fleas, blocking the ability of their central nervous system to send chemical messages, causing paralysis and death. Frontline is effective on both adult fleas and flea eggs, and as well as killing fleas already present on your pet, also works as a deterrent to keep additional fleas from setting up home on your pet. Frontline can also help to prevent and remove ticks too.

How is Frontline applied?

Frontline is a liquid solution supplied in individual dosage pipettes, which are factory sealed into single-use doses. When you are ready to use Frontline, simply snap the neck of the pipette to open it, and then apply the liquid to the skin on the back of your pet’s neck, before disposing of the packaging safely and washing your hands.

The Fipronil in frontline is contained within a carrier oil to diffuse the chemical and enable easy treatment. Application to the back of the neck, taking care to apply the product directly to the skin, allows the product to diffuse across the whole body of your pet, while also being in a location that your pet cannot scratch, bite or lick easily to remove the product.

Is Frontline effective?

Frontline is overall the most widely used flea treatment product in the UK, and for good reason. Frontline provides superior efficacy over alternative non-prescription products, is easily available to buy, and is easy and fuss-free to use, without the need to make your pet take a tablet, or using a topical powder or spray. This also means that Frontline is much less likely to lead to digestive upsets or allergic reactions that can occur with the use of ingested products, or topical products that your pet may be able to lick off their skin.

As well as treating fleas, Frontline is also effective against ticks too, killing ticks on the body of your pet and reducing the likelihood of ticks hitching a ride on your cat or dog. Frontline can even be used to remove ticks, by applying some of the product to a cotton bud and wiping this around the head of the tick when it is buried in the skin of your pet.

Frontline gets to work within 24 hours of application for fleas, and 48 hours of application for ticks. It is also long lasting, remaining effective for up to five weeks at a time for cats, and eight weeks at a time for dogs.

You can also bathe your dog or cat or allow your dog to swim from 48 hours after application without affecting the effectiveness of the product, however, frequent bathing or immersion in water more than twice per week may mean that you will need to re-apply Frontline more regularly.

How can I buy Frontline?

For many years, Frontline was only available with a veterinary prescription, which served to make it harder to source for many pet owners, as well as keeping the cost of the medication relatively high. However, Frontline for cats and dogs can now be ordered online from veterinary pharmacies that are authorised to dispense the product, making it easier to buy as well as more economical and viable for all pet owners.

Frontline is sold in packs of three, or six pipettes, in one size for cats and various different sizes for dogs, calculated by the weight of the dog.
