Previcox 57mg Chewable Tablets are a prescription-only veterinary medicine used in dogs to relieve pain and inflammation, especially when osteoarthritis starts to affect daily comfort and movement. Each Previcox 57mg Tablet contains firocoxib, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, from the coxib group.

Previcox 57mg is designed to target inflammatory pain in a more selective way than some older anti-inflammatory medicines. Vets commonly prescribe this treatment for chronic joint disease and for short-term pain control after soft-tissue, orthopaedic or dental surgery. By reducing inflammation as well as pain, Previcox can help support mobility, comfort and day-to-day quality of life in dogs that are sore, stiff or recovering from a procedure.

Description

When joints are irritated by osteoarthritis, or tissues become inflamed after surgery, the body produces substances called prostaglandins. These chemical mediators contribute to pain, swelling, heat and tenderness. The active ingredient in Previcox 57mg, firocoxib, works by selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2, usually shortened to COX-2. COX-2 is the enzyme most closely linked with the production of prostaglandins during inflammation. By reducing COX-2 activity, the medicine lowers prostaglandin synthesis and helps provide analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects. In simpler terms, this means less discomfort, less inflammatory swelling and better ease of movement for many dogs. Because it is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, some dogs begin to feel more comfortable quite soon after dosing, although the full benefit in long-term osteoarthritis management is usually judged over several days and with ongoing veterinary review.

The most common use for Previcox is the management of canine osteoarthritis, a progressive degenerative joint disease that can cause stiffness, pain and reduced range of motion. Osteoarthritis is often seen in older dogs, but it can also affect younger animals after injury, joint malformation or orthopaedic disease. A vet may also prescribe Previcox 57mg TabletS for post-operative pain and inflammation, including after soft-tissue surgery, orthopaedic procedures and dental work. This makes Previcox 57mg an option when a dog needs once-daily anti-inflammatory support during recovery. Although Previcox 57mg Tablet does not cure arthritis or reverse joint degeneration, it can play an important role in a broader pain-management plan that may also include weight control, physiotherapy, controlled exercise, joint supplements and regular reassessment. Many owners notice that when inflammation is better controlled, their dog becomes more willing to walk, settles more comfortably, and shows a brighter, more relaxed demeanour at home. In dogs recovering from surgery, careful pain management can also support smoother rest, steadier movement and a more comfortable return to normal routines.

These chewable tablets should always be given exactly as your vet prescribes. The recommended dose is based on body weight, with firocoxib generally administered at 5mg per kg once daily. The chewable tablets are scored, which means they can be divided into halves or quarters to help achieve accurate dosing when needed. Previcox 57mg Tablets can be given with or without food, although some dogs tolerate medication more comfortably when it is offered with a meal or small treat. Because accurate dosing matters with any NSAID, owners should avoid changing the dose, frequency or duration unless their vet advises it. For osteoarthritis, treatment length depends on the dog’s clinical response and should be reviewed regularly, especially during long-term use. Your vet may recommend periodic examinations and blood tests to assess renal and hepatic biochemistry, particularly in older dogs or in those with underlying health concerns. This monitoring helps make sure treatment remains both effective and appropriate as part of ongoing pain control.

As with other NSAIDs, this treatment is not suitable for every dog, and safe use depends on good veterinary guidance. It should not be used in dogs under 10 weeks of age or under 3 kg body weight, and it is not suitable for pregnant or lactating bitches. Previcox 57mg Tablets should also be avoided in dogs with gastrointestinal bleeding, blood dyscrasia or haemorrhagic disorders, and it must not be given at the same time as other NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Caution is especially important in dogs with suspected renal, hepatic or cardiac impairment, or in animals that are dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive, because these factors can increase the risk of adverse effects. The side effects seen most often are vomiting and diarrhoea, and these are usually transient and reversible when treatment is stopped. Owners should contact their vet promptly if a dog develops repeated diarrhoea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sudden weight loss, lethargy, blood in the stool, or any sign that seems unusual while taking Previcox 57mg. In some cases, a vet may decide to stop treatment, check hydration status, or run blood tests before choosing the next step in pain management.

What is Previcox 57mg Tablet used for in dogs?
Previcox 57mg is used to relieve pain and inflammation in dogs. Vets most often prescribe it for osteoarthritis, where sore joints affect movement and comfort, and for post-operative pain after soft-tissue, orthopaedic or dental procedures. It is a prescription-only treatment and should be used exactly as directed by your vet.

How do Previcox 57mg Tablets work?
Previcox 57mg Tablet contains firocoxib, a COX-2 selective NSAID. It works by reducing prostaglandin production, which helps lower pain, inflammation and heat in affected tissues. This selective action is designed to target inflammatory discomfort more precisely, helping many dogs move more easily and rest more comfortably.

How long does Previcox take to work?
Previcox 57mg Tablets are absorbed relatively quickly after they are given, so some dogs may show early improvement on the same day. With osteoarthritis, however, the most useful assessment is usually made over several days, as reduced inflammation and improved comfort become clearer with consistent daily dosing.

Can Previcox 57mg Tablet be given with food?
Yes, Previcox 57mg Tablets can usually be given with or without food. Many owners choose to give it alongside a meal or small treat, especially if their dog has a sensitive stomach or is happier taking medication with food. Always follow the dosing instructions provided by your veterinary surgeon.

What are the side effects of Previcox in dogs?
The most commonly reported side effects with Previcox 57mg Tablets are vomiting and diarrhoea. These are often mild and may settle once treatment stops, but repeated sickness, blood in the stool, lethargy, reduced appetite or sudden weight loss should be discussed with your vet promptly.
