Solensia for Cats - 7mg/ml - Pack of 2

Solensia for Cats is a prescription veterinary medicine used to help control pain associated with osteoarthritis (arthritis) in cats. It is given as a monthly injection by a veterinary professional or at home after training. Solensia is intended for cats that are showing pain-related changes such as stiffness, reduced willingness to jump, reluctance to climb, or reduced interest in play. Many cats with arthritis do not limp, so treatment is often based on the pattern of changes you notice at home alongside your vet’s examination findings.
Solensia is a refrigerated medication - We will send it via Royal Mail Special Delivery using insulated packaging and ice packs. A signature is required on delivery and it must be put straight into a fridge. We cannot guarantee same day dispatch for orders placed after 12pm. VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION REQUIRED.
Osteoarthritis is a long-term condition in which joints become less comfortable and less flexible. Cartilage can wear, the joint capsule can thicken, and tissues around the joint can become sensitive. Cats are skilled at hiding discomfort and they often adapt quietly by moving less. They may choose lower resting places, stop using high shelves, hesitate before jumping onto sofas and windowsills, or take longer routes that avoid climbing. Because these changes can happen gradually, arthritis can be present for some time before it becomes obvious.
Solensia contains frunevetmab, which is a monoclonal antibody. A monoclonal antibody is a targeted protein designed to attach to one specific substance in the body. In this case, Solensia binds to nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF plays an important role in activating and maintaining pain signals. In osteoarthritis, NGF released in and around affected joints can contribute to ongoing pain signalling from the joint to the nervous system. By binding to NGF, Solensia reduces NGF’s ability to activate its receptors and drive pain pathways. This can help reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis and support more comfortable movement.
Solensia works differently from anti-inflammatory medicines such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs mainly act by reducing the production of inflammatory mediators. Solensia targets NGF within the pain signalling process. Because it is a monthly injection rather than a daily oral medicine, it can be helpful for cats that are difficult to medicate at home. Your vet will decide whether Solensia is suitable for your cat, and whether any other treatments are needed alongside it.

More Information
Description
Cats with arthritis can show subtle signs that are easy to mistake for normal ageing. A cat may take longer to rise after rest, move more carefully on slippery floors, or avoid certain routes through the home. Changes in grooming are common, especially if bending and twisting becomes uncomfortable. You may notice a scruffier coat along the back, mats around the hips, or reduced grooming of the lower body. Some cats become less playful, sleep more, or seem irritable when handled around the hips or spine. Litter tray habits can also change if stepping in and out becomes uncomfortable.
The aim of Solensia treatment is to reduce arthritis pain so that everyday movement feels easier. When pain is better controlled, many cats show small but meaningful changes, such as getting up more smoothly after rest, jumping with less hesitation, moving more freely through the home, or returning to favourite resting places. Some cats also appear brighter and more sociable when discomfort is reduced. Response varies between individuals and can depend on factors such as which joints are affected, muscle strength, body weight, and how long the cat has been limiting activity.
Solensia is given as a subcutaneous injection, which means it is injected under the skin. It is usually administered once a month. The dose is selected according to your cat’s body weight, so accurate weighing is important at each visit. Keeping appointments on a regular schedule helps maintain consistent support. If an appointment is delayed, your vet can advise the best timing for the next dose and how to assess comfort between visits.
Arthritis management is usually most effective when medicine is combined with practical support at home. Maintaining a healthy body weight reduces strain on joints and can improve comfort over time. Gentle, regular movement is often better than occasional bursts of activity. Environmental adjustments can also make day-to-day life easier, including non-slip mats on smooth floors, low-sided litter trays, and steps or ramps to beds, sofas, and window ledges. Warm bedding and easy access to food and water can help older cats conserve energy and move comfortably.
Solensia does not cure osteoarthritis and it does not reverse joint changes. It is intended to control pain and support quality of life. Most cats tolerate Solensia well when it is used as directed by a vet, but side effects can occur. Some cats may experience mild, short-lived signs such as reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy. Mild injection-related reactions, such as temporary discomfort or skin irritation, can also occur. More serious reactions are uncommon but possible, and you should contact your vet promptly if you notice facial swelling, breathing changes, collapse, persistent vomiting, or any sudden change that concerns you. Your vet will consider your cat’s overall health, any other medicines or supplements, and appropriate monitoring during treatment.
How quickly can Solensia start to help?
Some cats show improvement within days to a couple of weeks, while others need longer to show clear change. Response can be gradual, especially if a cat has reduced activity for months. Many owners and vets assess progress over several weeks and across more than one injection.
How often is Solensia given?
Solensia is administered as a subcutaneous injection by a veterinary professional, usually once a month. The dose is chosen according to your cat’s body weight, so accurate weighing is important. Regular scheduling helps maintain consistent pain control and supports reliable assessment of response.
Does Solensia cure arthritis in cats?
Solensia does not cure osteoarthritis or reverse joint changes. Its purpose is pain control, which can improve comfort and quality of life. Arthritis management often also includes weight control, suitable activity, home adjustments such as ramps or steps, and addressing any other health issues found by your vet.
What are common signs of arthritis in cats?
Signs are often subtle. Common changes include hesitating before jumping, stiffness after rest, reduced interest in play, sleeping more, altered grooming leading to a scruffy coat, irritability when handled, and changes in litter tray use. A vet assessment is important because many conditions can look similar.
What can I do at home to help an arthritic cat?
Provide non-slip surfaces, warm bedding, and easy access to food, water and litter. Use low-sided trays and add steps or ramps to favourite resting places. Keep key resources on one level if possible. Maintaining a healthy weight and encouraging gentle, regular movement can support comfort.
