Vetmedin Oral Solution for Dogs - 50ml
960159
Vetmedin Oral Solution is a prescription-only liquid medication intended for dogs diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF). Vetmedin Oral Solution is supplied in a 50ml bottle that allows precise dosing by dropper. The solution is typically administered twice daily by mouth and can be offered with or without food. Vetmedin has a centuries-tested mechanism and delivers reliable support for dogs with cardiac insufficiency.
How Vetmedin works
Vetmedin (pimobendan) is a cardiac inotrope and vasodilator. It works through two principal actions. Firstly, it increases the strength of the heartbeat by enhancing calcium sensitivity in cardiac muscle cells, which helps the heart pump more effectively without significantly raising oxygen consumption. Secondly, it relaxes blood vessels by inhibiting phosphodiesterase III. That process reduces the workload on the heart and helps lower blood pressure in the vessels leading to the heart. Together these actions support more efficient blood circulation and ease the symptoms of congestive heart failure.
When Vetmedin may be used
Vetmedin is prescribed for dogs diagnosed with CHF caused by conditions such as dilated cardiomyopathy or mitral valve disease. In such cases, the heart’s ability to pump blood becomes compromised, leading to a buildup of fluid in the lungs or body cavities. A vet will recommend Vetmedin when the dog shows signs of heart failure, which may include coughing, difficulty breathing, reduced stamina, fatigue and fluid retention.

More Information
Description
Congestive heart failure in dogs
Congestive heart failure is a chronic and progressive condition in which the heart cannot meet the body’s demands for adequate blood circulation. It may result from structural heart disease, weakened heart muscle or valve degeneration. As heart function declines, pressure increases in blood vessels, causing fluid to accumulate in the lungs (pulmonary oedema) or abdominal cavity (ascites). Clinical signs include breathlessness (especially during rest or exertion), coughing, reluctance to exercise, rapid breathing, laboured breathing and general lethargy.
This condition significantly affects a dog’s quality of life and requires ongoing veterinary management. Veterinary therapy aims to relieve symptoms, prevent fluid accumulation, and support cardiac function.
Benefits of using Vetmedin Oral Solution
- Precise dosing via the dropper ensures accurate administration down to small weight ranges.
- Dual mechanism of action, combining enhanced heart pump strength with vessel relaxation.
- Rapid onset of effect, often with improved exercise tolerance and reduction in breathing difficulties within days of starting treatment.
- Oral administration allows easy integration into home care routines.
- Liquid format may be preferred for dogs that resist tablets or require variable dosing.
Vetmedin is a prescription medication and should only be given under veterinary guidance. Dosage must be carefully calculated according to the dog’s body weight, often at low milligram per kilogram levels. The typical dosing schedule is twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart, with or without food.
Dogs must be regularly monitored during treatment. Veterinary checks commonly include auscultation of the heart and lungs, body weight assessment and evaluation for signs of fluid accumulation. Periodic radiography or echocardiography may be used to assess cardiac size and function.
Potential adverse effects include a mild reduction in appetite, lethargy or gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhoea or vomiting. These effects are generally mild and transient. In rare cases, an irregular heart rhythm or fainting episodes (syncope) may occur, which should prompt immediate veterinary attention.
Vetmedin should not be used in dogs with known hypersensitivity to pimobendan or its excipients. It is also not recommended for dogs with certain congenital heart defects, such as dynamic outflow tract obstruction, unless under specialist supervision. Concurrent use of other medications should be managed carefully to avoid interactions; veterinarians may adjust diuretic dosages or other cardiac therapies accordingly.
Vetmedin Oral Solution should be stored at the temperature instructed on the packaging, typically between 2 °C and 25 °C, away from direct heat, moisture and light. The dropper should be cleaned and replaced after use, as instructed by the manufacturer. Always use the correct dropper to measure the daily dose and avoid contamination.
Owners should observe their dog’s appetite, breathing pattern, energy levels and any signs of coughing or swelling at home. Changes should be reported to a veterinarian promptly, as adjustments in dose or additional therapies may be required.
