Cytopoint 40mg Injection is a prescription veterinary treatment for dogs suffering from allergy-related itching, especially itching linked with canine atopic dermatitis. It contains lokivetmab, a targeted monoclonal antibody that helps block IL-31, an itch-signalling protein involved in allergic skin disease. Given by subcutaneous injection under veterinary direction, Cytopoint 40mg can help reduce scratching, licking, chewing, rubbing, and skin irritation while your vet investigates or manages underlying triggers such as environmental allergens, fleas, food sensitivity, ear problems, or secondary skin infections.

Cytopoint is a refrigerated medication - We will send it via Royal Mail Special Delivery using insulated packaging and ice packs. A signature is required on delivery and it must be put straight into a fridge. We cannot guarantee same day dispatch for orders placed after 12pm. VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION REQUIRED.

Cytopoint 40mg is an innovative biological therapy that works differently from conventional allergy treatments. It contains a caninised monoclonal antibody that specifically binds to and neutralises interleukin-31 (IL-31), a cytokine involved in sending itch signals to the brain.

By blocking IL-31, Cytopoint prevents the itch response before it begins, reducing the need for dogs to scratch excessively. Unlike steroids or immunosuppressive drugs, which have a broad impact on the immune system, Cytopoint precisely targets the underlying cause of itching without disrupting other bodily functions.

This targeted approach allows Cytopoint to provide fast and effective relief while minimising the risk of side effects. The injection begins to work within 24 hours and can last for up to eight weeks, making it a convenient and well-tolerated option for dogs with chronic allergic skin conditions.

Cytopoint 40mg may only be supplied with a valid veterinary prescription, issued by your vet. You should only purchase Cytopoint 40mg if you have or are in the process of arranging such a prescription. See information bar for further details.

Atopic dermatitis in dogs is a long-term inflammatory skin condition in which the skin and immune system overreact to substances that would not normally cause a problem. These allergens may include house dust mites, pollens, grasses, mould spores, storage mites, or other environmental particles, and some dogs also have overlapping food hypersensitivity or flea allergy dermatitis. The condition is often chronic and relapsing, which means signs can improve and then flare again during certain seasons, after a change in environment, or when the skin barrier is under strain. Cytopoint 40mg Injection does not remove allergens from the home or environment, but it can help reduce the distressing pruritus that keeps the itch-scratch cycle going. Common signs of atopic dermatitis include persistent scratching, licking paws, chewing legs or groin, rubbing the face, red or inflamed skin, recurrent ear irritation, hair loss, scabs, odour, and thickened or darkened skin after repeated inflammation. Cytopoint 40mg Injection may form part of a wider dermatology plan that includes parasite control, bathing, infection checks, diet trials, and skin barrier support.

Cytopoint 40mg works by targeting interleukin-31, often shortened to IL-31, which is a cytokine involved in sending itch signals in dogs. When IL-31 binds to its receptor, it can contribute to pruritus and the inflammatory behaviour that follows, such as scratching, chewing, rubbing, and licking. Lokivetmab binds specifically to canine IL-31 and helps prevent this signal from reaching its target. Because Cytopoint 40mg Injection is a monoclonal antibody rather than a tablet that is metabolised in the same way as many drugs, it has a focused mode of action and is given as a subcutaneous injection. This targeted approach is one reason vets may recommend Cytopoint 40mg for dogs that need ongoing itch control but also require careful consideration of other medicines, age, temperament, or tolerance of oral dosing. It is still important to remember that itch can have more than one cause, so a dog that improves on Cytopoint 40mg Injection may still need separate treatment for bacterial pyoderma, Malassezia overgrowth, otitis externa, mange, fleas, wounds, or hot spots.

The most frustrating part of atopic dermatitis is that itching can quickly become self-perpetuating. A dog scratches because the skin is irritated, then scratching damages the skin surface, which makes it easier for bacteria, yeast, and allergens to aggravate the area further. This cycle can affect comfort, sleep, behaviour, coat quality, and the relationship between the dog and owner, especially when itching continues through the night. Cytopoint 40mg is designed to reduce the itch signal so the skin has a better chance to settle while your vet addresses the wider picture. Some dogs show improvement quickly, while others may need a second monthly dose before the response is clearer. A limited response does not always mean nothing is wrong; it may mean that another condition is contributing to the symptoms. Your vet may recommend skin cytology, flea treatment, ear examination, food trial, allergy investigation, or antimicrobial treatment alongside Cytopoint Injection if the clinical signs suggest infection or another complicating factor.

Cytopoint 40mg is administered by subcutaneous injection, usually once a month when repeat treatment is appropriate. The 40mg vial strength is commonly used for dogs in the 30.1 kg to 40 kg weight range, although dogs above this weight may need a combination of vials to achieve the correct dose. The full contents of the vial are administered, and dosing should always follow your veterinary surgeon’s instructions rather than an owner’s estimate. Cytopoint 40mg Injection should be stored correctly before use, protected from light, and kept refrigerated as directed for the product. It should not be frozen, shaken excessively, or mixed with other veterinary medicines in the same syringe

What is Cytopoint 40mg Injection used for in dogs?
Cytopoint 40mg is used to help manage itch and clinical skin signs linked with allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis in dogs. It works on a specific itch pathway rather than treating every possible skin problem, so your vet may still check for fleas, infection, food allergy, or ear disease.

How does Cytopoint 40mg work?
Cytopoint 40mg Injection contains lokivetmab, a caninised monoclonal antibody that targets canine interleukin-31, also known as IL-31. IL-31 is involved in itch signalling. By blocking this pathway, the injection can reduce pruritus and help interrupt the scratching, licking, and chewing cycle.

How quickly can Cytopoint 40mg start helping?
Some dogs show reduced itching within the first day, while others take longer to show a clear response. Your dog’s improvement will depend on the severity of atopic dermatitis, whether secondary infection is present, and whether other triggers are being managed. Your vet may reassess after the first month.

How long does Cytopoint 40mg Injection last?
Cytopoint 40mg is commonly given once a month when repeat treatment is needed. The duration of benefit can vary between dogs, especially if seasonal allergens, infection, fleas, or other skin triggers are also present. Your vet will advise the best timing for repeat injections.

Can Cytopoint 40mg be used with other medicines?
Your vet may use Cytopoint 40mg alongside other veterinary treatments, depending on your dog’s condition. It may be part of a plan that includes parasite control, antimicrobial therapy, medicated bathing, ear care, or diet investigation. Vaccines should be given at a different injection site.

Why is my dog still itchy after Cytopoint 40mg Injection?
Ongoing itch after Cytopoint 40mg may happen if another problem is present, such as fleas, mange, food allergy, bacterial pyoderma, yeast overgrowth, or ear disease. Some dogs also respond less strongly to lokivetmab. Your vet may recommend tests, a second dose, or alternative treatment.
