Description

ADAPTIL Calm Diffuser Refill helps dogs settle in the part of the house where they sleep or spend most of their time. It contains a synthetic copy of the dog appeasing pheromone, sometimes called DAP. Nursing dogs naturally produce this signal to reassure their puppies, and adult dogs can respond to it too. The refill fits an existing ADAPTIL Calm plug-in diffuser. One 48ml vial provides up to 30 days of continuous use. If this is your first time using ADAPTIL Calm, you will need the starter pack that includes the electrical unit.

The plug-in warms the liquid and releases the pheromone into the surrounding air. Your dog does not need to wear anything, eat a chew or have the product applied to their coat. It can provide reassurance when visitors disrupt the household routine, a dog is getting used to a new home or fireworks make a familiar room feel less settled. ADAPTIL Calm is non-sedating. A useful sign of a response might be a dog choosing to lie back down after a noise that would usually keep them pacing, rather than becoming sleepy.

Placement makes a difference. Choose the room your dog actually uses: if they spend the afternoon by the kitchen door and only visit the hallway to greet people, the kitchen is the better choice. Plug the diffuser directly into an upright wall socket with at least 1.2 metres of clear space above it. Warm air rises, so a socket under a shelf, behind a sofa or below a windowsill can obstruct the release. One diffuser covers an area of up to 70m². Consider the layout as well as the floor area, especially if your dog spends long periods on different floors or behind closed doors.

For a planned event such as Bonfire Night, plug in the ADAPTIL Calm diffuser two to three days beforehand. Use a room where your dog already feels comfortable and let them choose where to rest. Keep the diffuser switched on through the night and when you go out, so the pheromone is present when your dog needs it. It takes around 24 hours for the diffuser to be fully operational. That describes the unit warming up and dispersing the pheromone; it is not a deadline by which every dog will show a change in behaviour.

If being left alone is the difficulty, it helps to know what happens after the door closes. A dog that briefly looks towards the door and then settles is having a different experience from one that paces, pants or barks for much of your absence. A short recording can give your vet a clearer picture than the state of the house when you return. ADAPTIL Calm can be part of support at home, but persistent distress needs an individual plan. A sudden change in behaviour also deserves a veterinary assessment, particularly if your dog seems uncomfortable at other times.

The vial and the plug-in unit have different replacement schedules. Change the ADAPTIL Calm refill about every 30 days and replace the electrical unit every six months, following the manufacturer’s guidance. Marking the date on the carton helps if several people look after the dog. The vial is designed for the ADAPTIL diffuser: do not pour the liquid into a fragrance burner, use another brand of plug-in or apply it directly to your dog. When replacing the refill, switch off and unplug the unit, let it cool, then fit the new vial before plugging it back in upright.

Does the ADAPTIL Calm 48ml refill come with a plug?

No. This product is one replacement vial. If you do not already have the compatible plug-in unit, choose the ADAPTIL Calm Diffuser starter pack, which includes both the plug and a vial.

What does DAP mean on an ADAPTIL listing?

DAP stands for dog appeasing pheromone. The refill reproduces a reassuring chemical signal familiar to dogs. It is intended to support a dog in their surroundings without sedating them.

Should I switch it off when my dog goes to sleep?

Leave it switched on continuously. If your dog sleeps in another room with the door shut, consider whether the diffuser is in the room where reassurance would be most useful.

How long will a 48ml refill last?

Allow up to 30 days of continuous use per vial. The electrical diffuser lasts longer: ADAPTIL recommends replacing that unit every six months, rather than buying a new plug with every refill.

Do two dogs in the same room need two diffusers?

Choose the number by the space the dogs use, not simply by counting dogs. One diffuser can serve a shared room within the stated coverage; separate floors or distinct living areas may need another unit.

Can I use ADAPTIL Calm for fireworks?

Yes. Start two to three days before the expected noise, in the room your dog is likely to choose. For a dog that panics or risks hurting themselves, speak to your vet ahead of the event.

Do I need a prescription for an ADAPTIL refill?

No. ADAPTIL Calm is a non-medicinal pheromone product. It can be bought without a prescription for use in a compatible diffuser at home.
