Prozinc Insulin for Cats and Dogs
Prozinc Insulin is a vet-prescribed insulin used to manage diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs. Prozinc contains protamine zinc insulin, an intermediate-acting insulin derived from recombinant human insulin. Prozinc is specifically formulated to help regulate blood glucose levels and reduce the symptoms associated with diabetes in pets. Prozinc is most commonly prescribed for cats with diabetes mellitus, but it may also be used in dogs under veterinary direction.
Prozinc helps stabilise glucose levels by mimicking the action of naturally produced insulin in the pancreas. The use of Prozinc requires a vet’s diagnosis and ongoing monitoring to ensure proper dosage and effectiveness.
How Prozinc Insulin Works
Insulin is a hormone that plays a critical role in regulating glucose levels in the bloodstream. In healthy animals, insulin is naturally produced by the pancreas and helps transport glucose from the blood into the body’s cells, where it is used as a source of energy. In diabetic pets, the body either does not produce enough insulin or is unable to use it effectively. This leads to elevated blood glucose levels, which can result in various health complications over time. Prozinc contains protamine zinc recombinant human insulin, designed for a prolonged effect. Once injected subcutaneously, Prozinc gradually releases insulin into the bloodstream, helping to control glucose levels throughout the day. Its intermediate duration of action allows for fewer injections compared to shorter-acting insulins. This makes it a suitable option for ongoing diabetes management in both cats and dogs when prescribed and supervised by a veterinarian. Each dose of Prozinc is tailored to the specific needs of the pet, based on factors such as weight, blood glucose readings, and clinical signs. It is important that pet owners closely follow veterinary instructions and monitor their pet’s condition regularly.
250mg Epilease capsules are designed to help control seizures in dogs diagnosed with epilepsy. The capsules contain potassium bromide, an active ingredient that stabilises electrical activity in the brain and reduces seizure frequency. Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurring seizures, which can vary in severity and duration.
Seizures occur when abnormal electrical impulses in the brain trigger involuntary movements, loss of consciousness, or behavioural changes. Epilease helps to regulate these electrical signals, reducing the likelihood of sudden seizures and providing long-term management of the condition.
Dogs with epilepsy require consistent medication to maintain stable brain function and prevent seizure episodes. Regular veterinary supervision and monitoring are essential to ensuring the effectiveness of treatment and adjusting dosage if necessary.
Epilease contains potassium bromide, which works by altering the way nerve cells in the brain transmit signals. Potassium bromide affects chloride channels in neurons, making them less excitable and reducing the risk of spontaneous electrical activity that leads to seizures. This stabilising effect helps to control epilepsy and prevent unpredictable episodes.
Potassium bromide is often used in cases where standard anti-seizure medications, such as phenobarbital, are not effective or cause side effects. It can be used as a primary treatment or in combination with other medications to improve seizure control.
As a long-term treatment, Epilease gradually builds up in the dog's system, requiring consistent daily administration. It may take several weeks before full effects are observed, and close monitoring is necessary to adjust dosage based on the dog’s response.

Zycortal for Dogs is a veterinary prescription medicine used to treat Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) in dogs. This injectable suspension is designed to help maintain electrolyte balance and prevent the life-threatening symptoms associated with this condition. It contains desoxycortone pivalate (DOCP), a synthetic mineralocorticoid that supports adrenal function by regulating sodium, potassium, and water levels in the body.
Addison’s disease occurs when a dog’s adrenal glands do not produce enough corticosteroid hormones, which are essential for various physiological functions. Without proper treatment, affected dogs may experience lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, and in severe cases, collapse. Zycortal is used in combination with glucocorticoid therapy to provide long-term management of the condition, helping to stabilise a dog’s health and improve their quality of life.
Zycortal contains desoxycortone pivalate (DOCP), which mimics the action of natural mineralocorticoid hormones that are normally produced by the adrenal glands. These hormones play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of electrolytes and fluids in the body. When a dog has Addison’s disease, their body fails to produce sufficient levels of aldosterone, a hormone responsible for regulating sodium and potassium levels. This imbalance can lead to serious complications, including dehydration, low blood pressure, and shock.
Once administered by a veterinarian as a subcutaneous injection, Zycortal helps to normalise sodium and potassium levels, reducing the risk of dangerous fluctuations. The active ingredient works over an extended period, typically requiring re-administration every 25 to 30 days. Since Zycortal only replaces mineralocorticoid function, dogs undergoing treatment will also need additional glucocorticoid therapy, such as prednisolone, to replace the deficient cortisol levels.
